A note on discipline

Chung Ling is an epitome of Communist China in the late 50s to 60s. Every headmaster is like a mini-Mao Zedong, although they process different ideology. Every few years, the school administration will suddenly swing far right, cracking down heavily on disciplinary issues, pushing conditions to the point of extremity. After a period of time, the situation will eventually cool down with a lax in disciplinary enforcement. However, the alarming issue is that during the peak of these ‘far right’ periods, propaganda is prolix and omnipresent. Students are called to turn their backs against other school mates. Everyone lives, or to an extent, survive, in a constant state of fear and heighted alert. No one knows who will next be called to face the discipline pagodas, where punishment will be meted out without compunction.
